Mad Monkey Potts Point is a social backpacker hostel in Potts Point, Sydney - the social epicenter of the Mad Monkey family, and the only hostel in the group offering free family dinners every single night. This Hostel has no heater in the room. I stayed 1 night and It was freezing cold in the room, around 10 degrees. Uff, that's too cold. I had asked the staff for a heater, they didn't have one.
Because of this, I find the hostel is overprized.

Lots of social activities, free dinner, good location, nice price. Great for making connections as a Work and Holiday maker.
It's very loud here day and night. No elevator. The bathrooms are pretty dirty. The long-term tenants arr acting out (people don't know what personal space is and how to behave in public). The outside area starts looking sketchy at night. Also tenants keep not washing their dishes and stealing each other's food. The vibe is a little chaotic.

The location was good
On the app, it was clearly stated that towels were provided by the hotel. However, upon arrival, we were informed that there were no towels available after I asked. This caused us considerable inconvenience, as we had to go out and buy towels elsewhere.
The check-in time was only at 2:00 PM, which should have given the staff enough time between check-out and check-in to wash and prepare extra towels for guests.
In addition, the staff were not very friendly, and the room was dirty, with belongings from previous guests still inside. This shows a lack of care with cleaning and room preparation.
I hope Booking can forward this feedback to the property and consider some form of compensation, as the experience was far below the standard expected

I’m a transient traveller picking up casual work in Sydney and happened upon Mad Monkey Backpackers. I initially planned to stay for two weeks but was so happy with the experience that I extended for a month.
The food is simple and rationed but varied enough to satisfy. The hostel attracts a diverse range of guests, and there’s always something going on, both on-site and off-site. The atmosphere is welcoming and tolerant, and the staff consistently maintain respectful and professional hospitality. I highly recommend this hostel to anyone looking for a friendly and comfortable place to stay in Sydney.

Should I keep going ? It’s maybe better to find it by yourself. Living in Mad Monkey Potts Point was more than just a place to sleep and eat, it’s a lifestyle, where I found a family and a safe place. After a 6-month stay, I’ll bring heaps of memories back home…. From a place I’m now also calling home.

Excellent location, close to public transport, or even you could walk to many places of interest, close to pubs, restaurants, shops, parks etc. The staff from reception is very kind and collaborative. I left my luggage stored earlier check in and later check out which day a very helpful.
The toilets cleaning sadly was not the best. beside some guest from other bedrooms did not follow the rules in shared zones. Few places in the facility are a bit small.

Rooms were exceptionally hot, one fan for a room of 6. Rooms were very very very tight, with no space to open a suitcase, it made you get to know your roommates very quickly. All the facilities were the same, tight to move around. Kitchen was shut at the most awkward of times for ‘free dinner’ which made it so hard to do your own cooking at a reasonable time. For the price you pay, just pay a bit more for somewhere more central and with some sort of AC

Doesn't have lift so taking 3 heavy bags 4 flights of stairs was PITA. I stayed for 2 weeks though so then ut didnt bother so much. If I stayed just one or two nights, would so hate it...

The rooms themselves were very clean and the beds were really comfortable, the underbed storage space and the lockers were great.

The fact that they do a dinner included each day was a surprise and the dinners were all great too!
Location is in a very lively nightlife area so lots to do nearby and only a 15/20 minute walk to the CBD
They also have a group chat where they announce any events or socials going on and you can ask questions if you need to.

Curtains on the beds would be the only change I’d make to the rooms but not vital really- it was fine without them.
Having only 2 bathrooms and 2 showers for the women and the same the men for each floor is a bit restrictive, you often have to wait to use them and then there are only 2 sinks so if people are doing makeup / hair, you can’t get in to wash your hands or brush your teeth- there is space for more mirrors/ shelves next to the sinks.
The bathrooms are fine in the morning / early afternoon when they’ve just been cleaned, but by 7/8pm at night they are kind of disgusting - dirt, toilet roll, and hair just all over the floor- they need to be cleaned more than once a day I think.
One of the showers on the 2nd floor too would leak no matter how tightly you turned the taps off- it’s a shame that the water is being wasted. There was a maintenance guy around though so perhaps this was being looked at.
The kitchen and dining area are very small for the hostel size and wasn’t ever completely clean, the tables are all squashed in there in a disorganised way and there’s not enough space for everyone during mealtimes.
There is a room with couches and cushions in, but it was dark and dingy and didn’t look like any of it had been washed in a while.
The staff were fine, not the friendliest that we’ve seen on our travels but no issues.
The whole hostel has a sort of “cliquey” vibe to it - it seems that the ones who stay long term are very close of course but it felt a bit difficult as an outsider to really get involved.
We joined one social event one evening and went to another venue with them but found it very hard to get involved and be included in conversation/ games. Perhaps that was just an isolated experience for us, but the general feeling of the place was that the staff and their friends were the main group, and others we have met since then also said they felt the same when they stayed there.

The nightly events are really fun and a great way to meet people. They give you lots of free alcohol too before nights out. Sam on reception was super helpful upon arrival. He told me everything I needed to know about my stay, the events made it super easy to socialise. Before the events the hostel provides free alcohol and free dinners. I also loved how easy it was get everywhere, super close to Kings cross train station where you can get the train into the city or bondi junction.
