So this was a bit of an experiment. I had only been in a hostel twice, for one night each time, and it was capsules rather than bunk beds.
Pros:
- There are curtains (at least in my room). This is the main reason why I chose this hostel over others. I don't understand how you can do without them, feeling like you're always being watched.
- There are also spacious lockers, I could even fit my suitcase (cabin size) in them.
- It's right in front of the Hollywood Highlands metro station (it's a small door, so look carefully), and it's on that half-kilometer where Hollywood's tourist nightlife is concentrated.
- The place has good metro connections to the central station (Union Station, for metro and other trains), Santa Monica, and Long Beach. There are many souvenir shops nearby, a couple of pharmacies (CVS/Walgreens, if you get sick like I did) and a few "survival" stores (Target, 7-Eleven), as well as a McDonald's a 3- or 4-minute walk away. .
- The hostel is very large, with people coming and going, and no one gives a damn about you. For someone with social anxiety like me, that's great.
- The kitchen is spacious but divided into two: a main one with a stove, pans, and pots (as well as spices), and another one that is basically only for tea and coffee. There are 3 or 4 refrigerators, and you have to put your name on them, otherwise they'll throw your stuff away (on paper, at least...), but I didn't use the service, so I don't know much about how it works.
- Large towel included (although it looked more like a blanket, in my case; maybe it was...), as well as soap and shampoo (to dry your hair, you have to ask for a hair dryer at the reception, at least for men, and it's free).
- It has a laundry service, they sell detergent, the room is all yours for those two hours, and it's more comfortable than going to a laundromat.
- While I understand that someone might steal it, you have to ask for the hair dryer at reception, which is an extra step...
- Laundry costs about $10 for two hours + $2.50 per "dose" of liquid detergent and must be booked by writing your name and room number on a sheet of paper hanging on the wall at reception. Fortunately, there was immediate availability in my case, but one washing machine (of two, as well as the dryers, all industrial machines) had a blocked liquid soap tube, so I had to move the soap into the drum manually (which is fine, but if I hadn't noticed, I would still have had dirty clothes despite the $12.50). So the negative points here are that you have to book it, there are not enough washers/dryers, and it's costly.
- Breakfast does not include that classic thing that should always be there: a chocolate/hazelnut spread.
- Quiet hours should be from 10 PM to 7 AM. I had a couple of Chinese tourists who, as they usually do, were planning on bringing back to China a whole new wardrobe and every evening until 11:30 and from 6 in the morning they were there messing around with plastic and paper bags, making quite a noise. Consideration is not a given.
- Cannot enter with your magnetic card; you have to ring the bell if you want to enter.

Smell in the rooms is really bad sometimes. I know that's something that depends a lot on the other people staying in the room, but it would be nice if there were some nice scents to help reduce the feet and wet smell?

It is convenient to go around LA. The metro is right in front of the hostel and the museums are just a few min walks away. Walk of fame are also right outside the hostel.

Somewhat good location - Hollywood, walking distance from the subway.
Good big kitchen with a lot of frying pans, big fridge and common spice rack.
- While there was "breakfast", it was poor even by already-low American standards. It was bread/bagels, instant oats, salted butter, jams and "cream cheese" in mini-packaging, oranges and some muesli bars. That's literally it. Not even peanut butter, no milk! And I'm not even talking about cheese/ham, eggs or yogurts... Tea bags present in the secondary kitchen only during breakfast time. Ok to have it, but everyone just goes to Target across the street and cooks something proper for themselves.
Staff is incredibly rude. Few seconds after welcoming me they went into rant that "I'll cancel your booking", "We can refuse service to anyone", "We won't accept you". I've not seen such rude behavior for years (last time it was also in US, coincidence?). All that's because they wanted to see "proof of travel" (how would a person travelling without planes have one? Own car is not accepted, rental car is not accepted. Come on, all people in US travel by car, and cars don't have "return tickets"). At the end, they "accepted" by rental car booking (upcoming in a few days), but with such a disguisting face and comment "we won't extend your stay". That's such nonsense, this alone already leads to not recommending this place to anyone. Owners really need to work with their reception personnel, it's crazy.
The room 35(?) had windows going directly onto Hollywood blvd. Windows had completely no sound isolation. So it means you literally cannoy sleep between at least ~18:00 and 23:00 - it is so loud even with closed window. I'm not a light sleeper, but that was really one of the worst sleeping conditions I've ever had in my life.
Separated bathrooms for male/female. While there was one bathroom just next door to my room, it was almost always occupied and the only other bathrooms were on different floor.
AC remote is on reception desk, so every time to make any little adjustment you have to go to the reception. On top of that, when at 1am I realized some of the neightbors have tuned the AC to freezing and I went to the reception for the AC remote, I got comment like "don't you have trousers?" (while I was of course wearing my underwear, because it's 1am in the middle of the night and I'm trying to sleep, I'm not going to dress like I'm going outside in this case!).

Rude receptionists, full of anger (towards who?)... only the white guy (that reminded me of Robert Greene) and the female receptionist were good. Its a busy area and on the weekends looks like its busy all night.

I’ve been staying at Samesun Hollywood for the past five years, every time I’m in LA, and it truly feels like my second home. The location is unbeatable — right in the heart of Hollywood — and the atmosphere is always warm, fun, and relaxed.
The staff is what makes this place special. I’ve had the honor of meeting Carl, John, and many others whose names I wish I remembered because every single one of them has been amazing. They always make you feel welcome, taken care of, and part of the vibe. It’s a very cool feeling you don’t get everywhere.
