Drakes Hotel - Brighton

Located on the seafront overlooking the Brighton Pier, Drakes is a 20 bedroom boutique hotel set in a pair of Regency townhouses in the heart of Brighton. The fully air-conditioned bedrooms have ‘Vi Spring’ beds adorned with Egyptian cotton sheets and goose and duck-down bedding, many of the rooms feature free standing baths looking out over the seafront. Positioned on Marine Parade, five minutes from the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Pier, Sea Lanes swimming, Soho House, the War Memorial and close to Kemptown Races, Drakes is the ideal place to explore the city, to enjoy the sea and beaches, to experience its famous social scene and to watch the glorious sunsets from our Cocktail Bar (or your bedroom) with a tipple or two.

Good position

It wasn’t suitable for any one with walking problems and it should be promoted as not suitable for such people. There is no lift, no hand rail when entering the premises, stares up to each floor and with our room we had to go down stairs to get to the bathroom. On booking we requested a walk in shower and we only received notification that this didn’t exist for a first floor room once we had paid and had entered the room. Luckily we were there for only 1 night. We couldn’t even go to the breakfast area as this was down a steep flight of stairs to the basement.

The bed is super comfortable, the view from the room was absolutely stunning. The bar staff were absolutely fantastic and so friendly. The biscuits were a nice touch also.

There was a bit of confusion on check in where the hotel could not find our booking had been paid prior to our stay and this was rather stressful to manage. If you have booked through booking.com just make sure you have a copy of the confirmation email to hand to avoid any problems.

The room itself was decorated really well with green and pink as the main colour palette. The large bath in the main room was lovely, the lighting was soft and not too bright. Really lovely selection of bits in the room for tea and coffee, the toiletries as well are nice. The bed is superbly comfortable with fluffy pillows and huge soft duvet. Views from the room to the sea are also fab! Staff are very friendly.

After spending nearly £400 on the room, I was a bit miffed that the parking was £25 per DAY not per STAY so we paid another £50 on top of our room rate (although this is advertised in the listing and I missed it). We were also a bit disappointed when the member of staff boasted about the new TVs with all the bells and whistles, only to find that Netflix was completely inaccessible as it hadn't been downloaded or something, and the TV still only had options for regular channels or youtube.

There was an internet problem and we wanted to stay in and watch TV but the TV apps were affected. When we asked at reception they said it was a problem with the provider. It would have been nice to have been offered a drink voucher or something for the inconvenience but it was not a big deal and I would return.

The view from my window was beautiful. Up early enough you do get a beautiful sunrise. It is near a buys road, but you still get a great view of the beach and Brightons iconic pier. Seeing the dogs on the beach chasing the waves was special. The fact the hotel has kept it regency originality whilst upgrading as much as it can, within respect to its character, is brilliant. So many buildings are knocked down to make way for concrete jungles, and this is a gem not to be missed. The mirror on the staircase is particularly pretty

The room was gorgeous, we were very lucky to be upgraded to a room with a sea view and a bath. The bath was a great size and lovely to relax in. The breakfast was delicious, and all the staff were very kind and helpful. Casey especially was great when we were checking in, she was really kind, and gave us lots of recommendations for Brighton.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but the doors to the bathroom don’t give you much privacy as they are glass.

The Drakes Hotel is a real gem in Brighton. Super friendly and helpful staff with great communication. The “pink and green” room was the nicest hotel room we have ever stayed in. Stunning interior design, an incredible sea view and such a comfortable bed. We had the most relaxing stay and can’t wait to return.

The location was brilliant, walkable to town centre, the lanes and pier. The bed was absolutely huge and the comfiest bed we’ve slept in ever! The room was very spacious, bright and smelt clean walking in. The view was amazing and it was lovely having the windows open overnight and listening to the sea. Check in and out times were perfect.

Although the room smelt clean, on closer inspection it was actually quite dirty. Surfaces were sticky, a lot of dust, we moved the tv (angled on the wall) and it was thick with dust on the back. Breakfast was “ok”, it was included in our room fee, however at £15 per head I would’ve expected much better quality and quantity, the bacon was tough and over cooked, the meal was served lukewarm. A misunderstanding with parking, we had already found a space in Brighton for free, but was offered by the hotel to park directly outside, which we accepted, what we hadn’t realised was the £25 charge that would come with it, this wasn’t made clear verbally with us and then when handed the large parking pass, we only noted our room and parking space number, not the much smaller print which said £25 charge (this was our fault I guess for not reading it, but then why would we read through the whole pass, when it wasn’t stated there was one verbally when handed it). I argued this the next day and stated we would be mad to have moved the car from a free space to a £25 space for the sake of a few minutes walk. They agreed to waive the charge, but moving forward they need to be clearer on the cost for customers, especially when booked through sites where this fee is not clearly shared.

We booked for comfort. A huge plush bed and a freestanding bath in the room fully achieved that. The weather was pretty tough during our visit but being able to lounge in the bath and look across the pier snd out to sea was glorious. The staff were lovely. Personable, professional and attentive. It was perfect. And we will revisit.

Parking was a little steep but not wholly unexpected with the location.

The room styling was lovely and location by the seafront was great. The waitress at breakfast was great too, as was the chef.

A ceiling panel fell down just where I was sitting in the restaurant with a bucket of water above it that came crashing down and nobody took my concerns seriously about it. I messaged the hotel privately but no reply, it was a huge health and safety breach and I wanted to know they had fixed the problem before a child sat there etc. The room was very noisy from the bins just outside the window and being right by the front door. I got woken up a lot.

Fantastic location. Very friendly staff. No request was too silly or unnecessary and you felt that they went out of their way to ensure you had the best time properly. Delicious cocktails in a beautiful bar area and a fair price.

A little expensive but appreciate that quality service and location are expensive! Not keen on wet room and lack of any view. Room 6 has “white” glazed windows which block out natural light - both wet room and lack of view well explained beforehand at time of booking.

This was a return visit for us, 14 years after our first stay we booked the same room and had a memorable time. The staff were great, the room was immaculate, and the added bonus of having the Dilsk restaurant downstairs was just the cherry on the cake. I cannot fault this hotel, and we will be back for sure

The shower was literally above the toilets sink! You cant even move in the toilet/bathroom. Hallway was so noisy even at 6 am. I could hear people walking from other floors which shows the room was not standard.
