Cleanliness and maintenance were amazing. Proximity to cool restaurants and stores was awesome. The hosts are kind and responsive to your needs. I like that they enforce quiet hours which is why I had respectful hostelmates during my stay.
Weak wifi since there are so many people using it at the same time. I had to pay $60 for mobile data during my 24-day stay to enable myself to work. If you are not looking to work remotely during your visit, everything else will be fine. Also, the place is close to a military base and helicopters fly almost all the time, otherwise it's quiet.

One of the best places to stay for cheap in L.A. - it's a really cute, family-owned guesthouse, with the family staying next door. They are just absolutely wonderful people, I talked to some neighbors who said the same thing. Everything was great - the beds comfy, the place very clean and spacious, and the location amazing. Trust me, you don't wanna stay right on Hollywood Boulevard, this is much better. Go check out Franklin Ave as well while you're staying there. The metro station is just 10 walking minutes away, and you have a 7/11 just a couple of mins away.
While I was there I saw that the city of L.A. put a notice of hearing on their fence, suggesting to demolish the building in order to transform the property into an apartment duplex. I really hope that isn't happening!!! This is such a gem of a place, so that would be such a shame.

Location was perfect and check-in was very easy
The bathrooms were not kept clean enough and the plumbing is bad. They put up signs telling us not to put toilet paper in the toilet and instead put it in the trash can. I've only encountered this crazy requirement in third world countries that I've traveled to which have poor infrastructure. It's crazy to see this in the USA. Fix your plumbing.

The location was good.
The place was not as clean as I expected, or at least it did not feel like. The bunk bed structures were also not solid enough, hence very sensitive to movements of other people. Sun light in the morning woke you up, there were no proper curtains.

Location was very close to Hollywood Boulevard, which is good. On the other hand not that far away you can find homeless tents. But that is for sure not a problem of the accommodation.
We came on a sweeping day so it was quite difficult to park on the street. I guess in other days it's okay.
The kitchen was sufficiently equipped for us.
Communication with the owner/manager was good.
Whole place was very dirty! One of the dirtiest accommodations we've been to. Maybe the most.
It seemed like nobody really cares about the place.
Bathrooms were really dirty - shower, sink, floor. And what I really hate - you can't flush toilet paper.
Kitchen was also very dirty everywhere. Refrigerator was dirty. Rooms were dirty...
There is almost no furniture in the rooms except beds so you have to put your stuff on the floor.
I really don't understand why this accommodation has such a high assessment.

The location is good but everything else was absolutely horrendous. I travel a lot but never in my life have I written a bad review but this was a terrible experience
The cleanliness. The whole place stank. You could not flush toilet papers so people put their wipes with feces in a basket which was sometimes not changed daily. the fridge was very dirty. the bathroom was the worst part for me. the floor was sticky and the bathroom rugs looked like they had mold. I cut my trip short and moved to another place cause it was unbearable.

The location was good if you want to be near Hollywood Boulevard and Griffith Observatory/Hollywood Hills for walking
Other than OK location and low price there was nothing to like about this place. The couple-particularly the woman were not friendly. She interacted just enough to show us where things were and that's about it. The "four bed dorm room" I was in was a thoroughfare, it had 2 rooms coming off it and people from those rooms were passing through at all hours of the day and night. The windows had no curtains so light poured in at sunrise. But worst of all are the bathrooms. Filthy. They ask you to not flush the toilet paper and want you to put it in waste paper baskets-this is disgusting. The "bath mats" were always soaking wet and looked dirty. They needed to clean the bathrooms way more often and they just don't. Thankfully I had sandals to wear in there! Didn't use the kitchen but wouldn't have wanted to! I don't know why this place is rated so high and people say they like it-maybe because it's cheap? Do yourself a favor and pay a little more to stay somewhere else. This place especially the bathrooms is nasty

It’s a shame that the hostel could make the guest experience a LOT better by just making a few small easy cheap changes:
- the rooms have NO CURTAINS ?? The light comes in from 5am when the sun starts rising. It would be so cheap to put in some basic curtains and would massively improve sleep quality. It’s really quite strange they don’t even have curtains….
- rooms advertised as being 4-6 in a room, but the rooms connect to each other. So you actually have 12-16ish people passing through your room to get to theirs - kept getting woken up.
- Only 3 bathrooms for all the guests. Not enough! Could do with a separate bathroom with just a toilet for those who don’t need to take up 20 minutes showering. Bathrooms needed cleaning more often due to the amount of people using each one.
- lots of unused food in the fridge and cupboards going bad. They need to do a big sweep and throw everything away.
- Very small lockers (a small backpack barely fits inside), and not enough for all guests

- The location is convenient. It's close to the metro station (about 15 minutes walking), and there are supermarkets and restaurants nearby.
- It's also (kind of) close to Lake Hollywood Park and Griffith Observatory.
- The front and back yards are beautiful.
- There's no curtains or reading light for each bed.
- There's no AC so it can be hot in the afternoon.
- The street where the hostel is at is quite safe, but just a few more steps you can find the areas a bit sketchy.

Gorgeous White House, nice garden, we arrived at night due to our flight, luckily I rang the host and he let us in even though it was past latest check in time. Notice of demolition sign but the hotel is running fine.
The location is ideal if you want to see Hollywood, 10 min walk to walk of fame. The street the house is on is nice, it has palm trees lining the street, and a distant view of the Hollywood sign! but the walk on Hollywood blvd/walk of fame is not recommended, its unpredictable. I recommend going to the beaches, Griffith observatory, Hollywood sign, it’s beautiful and safe.
The bathrooms just need cleaning more regularly, lots of hair on the floor, also there is a sign to not flush tissue paper so there is lots of human soiled tissue in the bins , not good. The dorm room was nice, the 6 bed dorm one didn’t have a plug for phone for us to use, the 4 bed dorm
Was the best, nice room, we charged our phones. There is a kitchen and lounge.

Staff gets maximum stars for customer service. I arrived late near the end of normal check-in hours due to a flight delay. Upon arrival, I had a personal challenge WRT interfacing the room environment. Staff bent over backwards in helping me solve it, then for the final day of two there they quickly found a more practical solution. They did so with excellent communication by word of mouth and via online notifications. This was easily one of the best places I have stayed at in terms of staff attention to details and making a situation manageable that I've ever seen. Despite the circumstances being beyond their control, they tried to go the extra mile and more. They did not have to do so, but did it anyway. That is very rare for a business, especially a service oriented one!
I actually prefer older facilities like this one. The house was nice but quite old. However, that can lead to practical situations and limitations WRT to modern conveniences. One needs to consider that if comparing it to other newer facilities and choose accordingly to personal preference. Overall, they did a credible job at trying to keep expected conveniences possible given the age of the building.

I like the easy check in process and that the property is gated. The hostel is located on a very beautiful street with lots of trees and flowers. You do not get that with any other hostel stay or anywhere in Los Angeles and it was a great surprise. I spent much of my time on the porch and almost thought of staying and laying out in the sunshine in the lawn! The bunk beds were extremely comfortable. They are the best I have ever slept on in a hostel. I believe the mattress and pillows were the conforming kind. I could tell that love went into the place by the owners. There are a lot of items from Target including cleaning supplies and towels. That was a nice surprise. There is a bus stop at the end of the street for the 217 which goes up and down Hollywood in addition to taking you right to the Metro. If you have any problem finding the house, it is a little further down the street than I expected and it is on the left. I felt safe and comfy after I had a long day and late check-in.
I wish there was a couch in the hostel to sit on. I have a back problem and that is pretty much my only complaint.

Starting with the warmest welcome of the host, our stay was incredible from all perspectives: comfy beds, clean bathrooms and shared areas, good location and all-in service for a hostel. To be honest, I was expecting less as many of my friends told that hostels in Hollywood was not good in quality but The California - Holllywood just demolished the rumors. It was one of the best hostels I have ever stayed as a fellow traveler. Already recommended to some colleagues who are planning to travel LA in upcoming months! Please keep up this high standard, and thanks for the Turkish tea!

The hostel prides itself on being quiet, which is perfect for escaping the madness of Hollywood.
Speaking of which, its location is perfect, situated only minutes of walking away from Hollywood Blvd.
The bed was sturdy.
The kitchen and the bathrooms functioned as hoped.
There was a super cool doggo out back when I was there!
There are not enough bathrooms for the number of people they cater to.
The Wi-Fi in my room wasn't great.
The rules were a little strict. No food was allowed in the rooms, and I was shushed once for speaking too loud. However, I see the value in these restrictions, and one could argue they are for the best.

It was nice enough I just didn’t expect it to be so full, not enough privacy being a dorm space. Didn’t expect to be sleeping in rooms with young men as well as women. That was out of the ordinary for myself and sister.
For the most part the people that stayed there were very nice and friendly. It was good for the price you paid for the room, really couldn’t ask for much better not knowing much about the area.

The location is good and the size of bedroom. The bed is good. you can make your breakfast, lunch and dinner, kitchen has all things that you need.
1)Cleaning. The shower curtain and bathroom rug are dirty. The kitchen surface is greasy.

Owners Alex and his wife are fantastic. Good vibes with fellow travelers. Trader Joes, laundry, bus and train stations at 15 mins walking distance nearby. Good kitchen. Nice adorable dog Hansi. Alex is good with enforcing rules.
Some rooms can lack ventilation as they are, probably overpacked with 6 beds.

The staff was beyond friendly. The other guests were respectful. The location was perfect for us because it was close to places we needed to be. There was free coffee (although not the best flavour, but free coffee is free coffee).
The AC facilities, even though we had AC in the room, the outlet was behind a bed so all the cool air got kind of "trapped" under one of the beds, so it was quite hot at night. Lockers were not too big and it would have been good if they were in the floor our beds were.

The location is fabulous in a quiet neighborhood right off the Hollywood Blvd.
It is absolutely run down the owners do not keep it clean and it seems it has been going on for years. It is so uncomfortable to shower in the old showers so, I went somewhere else. The bed stairs to the bunk are dirty as well as the kitchen, windows and yard. They don't seem to care for and love the property. I would skip this place and ignore the high ratings. It is disgusting, gross and unclean.

I had an amazing stay at The California hostel in Hollywood! The location is unbeatable, just a short walk to major attractions like the Walk of Fame. The staff were super friendly and always available to help. The rooms were clean and comfortable, with a great vibe in the common areas to meet other travelers. The location was very convenient to all the sights. The street parking was fairly easy and free.
The house is an old building so all the floors creak whenever you walk through the house. You also can't bring drinks or food into the bedrooms upstairs so if you got thirsty you would have to go downstairs.

The California had all the basics. Fridge, kitchen, dining area, multiple bathrooms, small 8x8 locker (bring your own lock), bunk beds, linens, secure entrance and WiFi.
I didn’t like how much light came through the window of the bedroom door. Bring a sleep mask and headphones/earplugs. Since there were hard wood floors, walking and shuffling belongings created noise in the five twin-bed bedroom.

located in hollywood
got a hostel tour, upon walking into my "room" beds weren't made and when i inquired about my bed not having a blanket, the manager grabbed an already used/unfolded one from a vacant bed and passed it over to me. felt as if i was walking into someone's house to sleep over. major red flag.
wifi didn't reach the room i was in and phone signal was extremely low. no in-room lockers. the only ones available were in the living room and they weren't big enough to fit a small backpack.
left not even 20 min into arriving. called booking customer service to detail what i had experienced.

The location is really close to the Walk of Fame and Hollywood sign. The overall place is okay but the bathrooms are not that clean. The rooms were really clean.
This is a house with people, not a usual hostel. Most of the people there are not tourists but people who have been there for a longer period.

Location was excellent. Two blocks from the Hollywood boulevard.
It was very calm, comfortable and cozy.
Everybody was very kind, respectful and nice to me.
I was very comfortable.
Should have brought a lock and key with me to use the lockers just in case. But I only needed it once.
Overall, it was good.

Location was great for walking enthusiasts and people who don't want to rent cars
Toilet paper cant be flushed, so theres an open view of sanitary wipes and bodily stuff in view. my roll of socks while showering rolled into the bin so i called it a loss.

Location is a prime spot. It located only a few blocks away from Walk of Fame and Kodak theater in Hollywood, and not too far from West Hollywood. AND if you want to walk to the Griffith Observatory, it's only 5mins away.

I had a room with a balcony, I am someone that likes to sit outside to myself. Opportunity to tan without being seen, and great view of moon. And my bed had a window to look out and not feel closed in.
The house holds a lot of travelers. You should get up early to avoid the morning bathroom Rush.

The staff was friendly. Quiet, nice neighborhood. The bed was comfortable. Was able to store luggage while out during the day after I checked out.
The distance to the metro station. Was a good 15 minute walk to the closest metro (or you can take a bus). Not many food or shopping options unless you walk 15-20 minutes as well or take a rideshare.

It was at an extremely convenient location, it is spacious, big, old yes but I love old houses so I enjoyed everything about it! Beautiful home
Hmmmm maybe just the squeaky floors as I like to be considerate of others so I take off big shoes, BUT it’s an old home! Regardless, I truly enjoyed my little time here.

Beautiful old Craftsman home in Hollywood. The most peaceful, quite environment. Close to Gelson's a 1st class grocery market with great to go meals.
